HBO has released its first trailer for Donyale Luna: Supermodel, a documentary exploring the life and career of one of the first– and most famous– black supermodels of all time. Throughout the late 1960s and 1970s, she broke through the modeling world’s racist stereotyping to grace the cover of Harper’s Bazaar in 1965 and British Vogue in 1966.
The documentary will focus primarily on Luna’s childhood and the racism that she encountered in the modeling industry.
I know I’m the best model, so why am I not being photographed? -Luna asks in archival audio shown in the trailer.
Donyale Luna’s being was discounted because she was a black woman, and she wasn’t even regarded as a person by most,- says one expert in the trailer.
As a human, what she would have experienced in being on the receiving end of that backlash is horrific.
The documentary will also show the iconic artists that Luna worked with during her illustrious career, including Andy Warhol, Salvador Dalí, Mia Farrow, and The Rolling Stones.
Donyale Luna: Supermodel will feature the voices of her husband and daughter; supermodels Beverly Johnson and Pat Cleveland; Vogue global editor-at-large Hamish Bowles; fashion designers Zandra Rhodes and Aurora James; former Essence editor-in-chief Constance White; former president of Next Model MGMT Kyle Hagler; and friends and family members.
The documentary will be released on September 13 and stream on MAX.
