Harrison Ford returns as Indiana Jones for a fifth project, and the category is: time. The 80-year-old actor told Esquire Magazine that he intended on embracing not only his own age but also the age of his character in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.
Ford turns 81 years of age just weeks after the film opens in theaters on June 30th, but according to Variety, he refused to let that get in the way of bringing in an authentically, action-packed performance. When asked about reprising the role of Indiana Jones, Ford stated that he wanted “an ambitious film to be the last one.”
In one specific action sequence, the character is riding a horse through the streets of New York City. Ford recalled feeling the hands of three stunt workers spotting him while the actor was on horseback. Granted, the stunt workers were simply doing their jobs on set, but Ford was set on his vision for the character and did not want to conceal the aging process of Indiana Jones.
I thought, ‘What the fuck?’ Like I was being attacked by gropers. I look down and there’s three stunt guys there making sure I didn’t fall off the stirrup. They said, ‘Oh, we were just afraid because we thought, you know, and bah bah bah bah.’ And I said, ‘Leave me the fuck alone… Leave me alone, I’m an old man getting off a horse and I want it to look like that!’
Some days on set are not the easiest, however, with Ford having to sit out of production for weeks on end due to injuries, including one on his right shoulder that took production out for two weeks and the actor out for 6 more.
“Yeah, well, I’m also known for shutting movies down because I get hurt, which is not something you want to be known for,” Ford commented, “But hey, shit happens.”
Setbacks like this, however, have not stopped the actor from taking on more physically rigorous roles in his career. He has also been filming in Atlanta for Captain America: New World Order. Ford will be playing the role of Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross in his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny opens in theaters on June 30th with Walt Disney.
