Lin-Manuel Miranda’s hit hip-hop musical Hamilton is set to be released to Disney+ on July 4.
The filmed version of Hamilton was initially set for an October 15, 2021 release, but Disney + has accelerated their schedule in order to release it during COVID-19. The film’s release date move was announced on Good Morning America by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Disney Executive Chairman Robert Iger.
“I’m so grateful to Disney and Disney+ for reimagining and moving up our release to July 4th weekend of this year, in light of the world turning upside down. I’m so grateful to all the fans who asked for this, and I’m so glad that we’re able to make it happen. I’m so proud of this show. I can’t wait for you to see it,” said Miranda in a statement.
The film is a 2016 recording of Hamilton with the original cast, including Miranda, Leslie Odom Jr., Phillipa Soo, Anthony Ramos, Christopher Jackson, and Jonathan Groff. Additionally, Thomas Kail, the original director of the Broadway hit, serves as director. Hamilton won 11 Tony Awards back in 2016, along with the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
“The film is a leap forward in the art of ‘live capture’ which transports its audience into the world of the Broadway show in a uniquely intimate way. Combining the best elements of live theater, film, and streaming, the result is a cinematic stage performance that is a wholly new way to experience Hamilton,” Disney released in a statement.
