Even though John Wick fans have over a year to wait for Keanu Reeves to reprise his role as ‘Baba Yaga’ John Wick in the franchise’s fourth installment, they are not starved for related content.
The most recent news comes from Halle Berry, where during an interview with IGN promoting her new movie Moonfall, she teased a possible spinoff for her ex-assassin character, Sofia Al-Azwar.
“Sofia’s not in the next ‘John Wick’ movie,” Berry said, but “there could possibly be a Sofia…her own movie. So she might not be in John Wick, but she might be doing her own thingy-thingy.”
She also said starring in her own spinoff movie would be “putting some ointment on a little sore,” alluding to her canceled Die Another Day Bond girl spinoff in 2002. Berry explained, “It was ahead of its time. Nobody was ready to sink that kind of money into a Black female action star. They just weren’t sure of its value. That’s where we were then.”
Audiences last saw Sofia in John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, ditching John in the North African desert after leaving her post as manager of the Continental Hotel in Casablanca. Though Keanu Reeves played the titular role, Berry held her own, performing spectacular stunts with her dogs and demonstrating fantastic marksman skills.
Berry’s pitch is not far-fetched as The Continental, a confirmed series for Starz, will premiere later this year. That series will feature a young Winston Scott, John Wick’s ally-turned-enemy, set in 1970s New York. Another is a film spinoff currently in development titled Ballerina and starring Ana de Armas. No other details have been revealed
John Wick: Chapter 4, directed by Chad Stahelski, will premiere on March 24, 2023.
