Greta Gerwig’s ‘Narnia’ Films May Be Adapting Prequel Book, Not The Originals

Jason Isaacs (The Patriot, Harry Potter) revealed in an interview with The Week that Greta Gerwig’s highly anticipated Chronicles of Narnia adaptations for Netflix may not be based on the beloved original books. Instead, he brought up that they may in fact cover the prequel book, The Magician’s Nephew.

In the interview, Isaacs was going over his favorite books, and he chose The Magician’s Nephew as one of his favorites. He explained the choice by saying, “I loved all the Narnia books as a kid. When Peter was told he wouldn’t be coming back, I understood something devastating about mortality. I picked this one because Greta Gerwig is about to make a film of it, which I can’t wait to see.” This quote could mean a few different things, but it does put the prequel in the conversation.

Gerwig is currently planning to make two films for her Narnia adaptation. Details are currently scarce, so it is unclear if they will be two parts of one book or two book adaptations. One possibility with this news is that the first film would be The Magician’s Nephew, followed by The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. The quote is not definitive however, as Isaacs could very well have been referring to Narnia as a whole when he mentioned the Greta Gerwig adaptation.

The Chronicles of Narnia books were written by C.S. Lewis and were adapted into three films in the 2000s. It follows a group of three children as they discover a whole new fantasy world by walking through their wardrobe. The Magician’s Nephew is a prequel that takes place 1000 years before The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. This is by no means a confirmation that Gerwig will be directing a prequel film, but it is certainly a strong possibility.
