Don’t get them wet, don’t feed them after midnight, and don’t miss the third film. A new sequel to Gremlins is now in the works.
Joe Dante’s original Gremlins has become one of the top staples of 1980s pop culture. The first film followed Billy Peltzer trying to navigate early adulthood when he received an odd Christmas gift from his father. But when the odd rules about the creature are broken, it spawns countless destructive beings that take over the town with their own unique madness.
David Zaslav himself confirmed that the film would happen, according to Hollywood Reporter. He broke the news during Warner Bros.’ annual quarter earnings presentation, while also stating that Steven Spielberg will be on board, akin to Gremlins and its sequel, The New Batch, as a producer. Chris Columbus will also return to the series after writing the script for the first film.
“It’s an honor to reunite with Steven Spielberg and Warner Bros., as we bring this latest chapter of Gremlins to a brand new generation of moviegoers who will experience all of the thrills of this grand adventure on the big screen,” Columbus told Hollywood Reporter.
While he will be solely taking on directing, Columbus won’t be the only writer on the production. Although the idea of merging Gremlins and Final Destination may not totally gel with some viewers, the directors of the horror franchise’s latest installment, Final Destination: Bloodlines, will play a heavy role in the creative process of the untitled Gremlins sequel. Both Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein will be assisting Columbus with writing the screenplay, marking the second time since 2018’s Freaks that the duo will work together on a script.
Gremlins 3 is eyeing a release of November 19th, 2027.
