‘Greenland’ Sequel Finally Moves Ahead With Production

The sequel to the Gerard Butler-led Greenland, dubbed Greenland: Migration, is moving forward with production after an extended period of development trouble. It is expected to begin filming around April of this year.

The first Greenland movie follows an engineer attempting to get his family to safety as an asteroid threatens to destroy Earth. Amidst his efforts, the family gets split apart, leaving them to try to work their way back to each other while also surviving. The sequel will see the family attempt to keep their lives together while bearing witness to the cataclysm left by the asteroid.

Butler headlined the film as the character John Garrity and starred alongside Morena Baccarin who played his wife, Allison Garrity and Roger Dale Floyd who played his son, Nathan Garrity. Released in 2020, Greenland was directed by Ric Roman Waugh, with the script written by Chris Sparling. Both are returning to work on the sequel, joined this time by Mitchell Lafortune as a writer.

Variety, who also confirmed production will be moving forward, stated that the sequel was caught in a slew of production troubles. STX Entertainment put down $75 million to get the rights to the film, but STX later was bought by Najafl Companies, after securing bankruptcy protection for the sequel. Sébastien Raybaud, one of the film’s producers said, “We are thrilled to have Gerard, Morena and Ric back on board for Greenland: Migration to show the audiences what happened next to the Garrity family.”
