Almost four years after Avatar, “3D” is still one of the most charged buzzwords in Hollywood. We’ve spoken about it several times over the last few months alone, from Avatar director James Cameron’s comments on the use of 3D technology, to some of Hollywood’s top editor’s thoughts on post-conversion, to Ang Lee’s continued use of 3D (following Life of Pi). If there’s one conclusion to draw, it’s that 3D, like any other piece of filmmaking technology, is best deployed with intention. With that in mind, this nifty little featurette just hit the web, and features comments from Gravity personnel, including director Alfonso Cuaron, star Sandra Bullock, and some of the film’s producers.
To us, it sounds like more than just lip service. If there’s anywhere that depth-of-field is both important and hard to judge, it has to be space. The sheer scale and scarcity of objects makes it difficult to establish points of reference. The film has already made waves with the critics, and audiences will have a chance to judge for themselves beginning October 4.
