Netflix just released the trailer for their upcoming Goonies inspired family adventure film Finding ‘Ohana. The film will follow two siblings from Brooklyn, Pili (Kea Peahu) and Ioane (Alex Aiono), who go on a vacation to Oahu to visit their grandfather. After they discover that their grandfather is on the verge of losing the family home, Pili finds an old journal which tells the location of a hidden treasure.
The sisters then embark on an adventure to find it in order to save their grandfather’s house. The film has been compared to The Goonies ever since it was announced, and the new trailer just heightens those comparisons, including a scene recreating the iconic film’s poster and having Ke Huy Quan in the cast, who played Data in The Goonies. According to Movie Web, comic book writer and screenwriter for the film Christina Strain set out to write “…a Goonies style movie in Hawaii that was about family, culture, and heritage”. Although the film was obviously influenced by the iconic 80s film, it very much has its own identity with a Hawaiian setting and a modern twist. This will be Young Sheldon’s Jude Weng’s directorial debut.
Keep a lookout for Finding ‘Ohana, as it debuts on Netflix on January 29, 2021!
