Glenn Howerton recently has spoken about how shaving his head for BlackBerry has changed how he views himself. The It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star portrays Jim Balsillie in BlackBerry, the newly released film about the revelation of the BlackBerry smartphone. Something that comes with the portrayal of real-life people is the matching of their physical looks. This meant that Howerton would become bald for the role to match Balsillie’s appearance.
Entertainment Weekly spoke with Howerton about his physical change for the film. He said, “It’s funny, I didn’t realize how much of my identity was wrapped up in the fact that I’ve always had a full head of hair until I shaved it all off. It stripped me of a large part of my identity in a way that I hadn’t anticipated and was very, very helpful. It instantly aged me. Even though I’m in my mid-40s, I still feel like a guy in his 20s. But once I was in a Harry Rosen suit and was bald, all of a sudden I felt like a completely different person, and it put me in a completely different place… I actually learned to really like the way it looked.”
Matt Johnson, the co-writer and director of the film also spoke about his thoughts on Howerton’s change in appearance, telling EW, “I was actually quite proud of him. I thought, ‘I can’t believe he’s willing to do this’.”
Howerton stars alongside Jay Baruchel in BlackBerry, now playing in theaters. See the trailer for the film here:
