Glen Powell Discusses Upcoming Film ‘Twisters’

The new Twisters film starring Glen Powell is attempting to turn 1996’s hit Twister into a new franchise, but in recent interview with Vogue, Powell states the film isn’t a reboot: “We’re not trying to recreate the story from the first one. It’s a completely original story. There are no characters from the original movie back, so it’s not really a continuation. It’s just its own standalone story in the modern-day.”

Minari director and Oscar-nominee Lee Isaac Chung will be directing Twisters. Alongside Powell, the film will star Daisy Edgar-Jones, Anthony Ramos, Brandon Perea, Daryl McCormack, and Maura Tierney. Because of the strikes earlier this year, production on the disaster film was paused but has resumed since then according to Variety. The film is still on track for its release date next year, but the plot’s details have not been revealed yet.

During his interview with Vogue, Powell also mentioned a piece of insight Tom Cruise, his co-star in Top Gun: Maverick gave him: “If you want to make movies of a certain size and scope and scale, you have to figure out what can connect with everyone around the world in every territory.”

Powell believes this insight applies to Twisters because “humans versus weather is a very universal idea — how powerless we really are in the face of these cataclysmic forces.”

Twisters is set to be out in theaters on July 19, 2024.
