The world of fitness is mourning one of its greatest ambassadors. Former Mr. Universe and The World Fitness Federation ‘Living Legend Award’ winner Mike Mitchell died at the age of 65 on Saturday, July 24th. A heart attack while on a boat in Turkey is reportedly the cause of death.
The two time Mr. Universe and five time Mr. World award-winning herculean actor peaked fame in the late 90s as he was one of the Scottish warriors fighting for freedom in Mel Gibson’s Academy Award winning film Braveheart (1995).
A few years after he would join the cast for yet another Academy Award winning film, Ridley Scott’s Gladiator (2000). This time around he would join the fight alongside a Spanish gladiator known as Maximus, interpreted by Russell Crowe, in the Roman Colosseum. His acting career continued in the 2000s and 2010s in movies such as One Day Removals, Emerdale and City of Hell.
Mike Mitchell will be remembered not only by the fitness community but also by his close friends and family as his manager gave a public statement to TMZ saying: “The sudden death of an international actor we managed, an honest person, a real actor, a true friend, my dear friend, has saddened us deeply. I’ve always been honored to be your manager…”
