Former NFL quarterback Doug Williams has become the subject of Hollywood news. As the first African American quarterback to lead a team to a Super Bowl victory, Williams will become the focus of an upcoming biopic from Will Packer Productions, according to Deadline.
The L.A. production company, responsible for hits such as Girls Trip and Night School, officially secured exclusive rights to Williams’ autobiography which examines his early career leading up the moment he raised the Lombardi Trophy for the Washington Redskins in 1988. The biopic will explore Williams’ ascent to the top of the league, where he was renowned as a tactful leader and tremendous friend by his teammates. Williams’ Super Bowl run with the Redskins eventually cracked the myth of African American quarterbacks being capable of winning at the highest level of the sport – the postseason. Russel Wilson recently became the second African American to accomplish this feat after he navigated the Seattle Seahawks to a landmark 43-8 Super Bowl victory against the Peyton Manning-helmed Denver Broncos in 2013.
“There are no better individuals than Will Packer and James Lopez to really tell my story,” stated Williams, who is currently heads SVP Player Development for the Washington Redskins. “Their unparalleled success in moviemaking ensures that my journey will be told with the upmost authenticity. I am very excited to be working with Will Packer Productions.”
Packer and James Lopez will be producing through their banner and will assign a writer in due course.
