‘Girls Trip’ Director on Board to Direct ‘Space Jam 2’

In terms of highly talked about sequels that have been trapped in development hell, Space Jam 2 has easily been one of the biggest. The Michael Jordan and Bugs Bunny crossover movie from 1996 was smash hit at the time and since then, it has received a huge cult following for it being a weirdly ambitious crossover film. Now a sequel is finally coming out, this time with NBA All Star LeBron James and attached to produce the upcoming project is Black Panther director Ryan Coogler.

Now the film officially has a director attached to the film, and this time being Malcolm D. Lee. Lee is mostly well known for various comedies, most notably Girls Trip and Night School, both of which featuring Tiffany Haddish. Lee is replacing the original director assigned the upcoming project, Terrance Nance. Nance was known for creating the HBO series  Random Acts of Flyness and directed the film The Oversimplification of Her Beauty. Not much has been stated on why the directors were switched for this project, but it could be assumed that it is due to Lee’s greater experience in comedies and his films being over-all more profitable than Nance’s. Regardless, Space Jam 2 is closer to becoming a reality after so many years of rumors and discussion. Fans will finally witness Bugs Bunny’s return to the basketball stadium in an epic showdown.

Space Jam 2 is set for release July 21st, 2021.

Ryan Pineda: When it comes to film, animation, video games and other mediums, I can discuss for hours about how much on why certain films and animated media made me the person I am today. I adore the artistic merit that comes from a lot of pop-culture media and will definitely love to have a conversation about favorite movies any day! I have graduated in 2017 with a BA in Film and Television at the University of Arizona. Been passionate about writing about films due to always having an interesting outlook on the medium. Will always see a film and will definitely be sure to recommend it to someone that I know for a fact would love that movie. Not only that but will also give reasons for why I think that film did or did not work as a movie, and the same can go for other pieces of media like television, video games and especially animated projects.
