Jane the Virgin‘s Golden Globe-winning lead Gina Rodriguez (Deepwater Horizon) is reportedly in talks to join Alex Garland’s (Ex Machina) next project Annihilation, according to The Wrap.
The adaptation of the novel by Jeff Vandermeer stars Natalie Portman (Jane Got a Gun) as a biologist who leads a group on an expedition to Area X, a part of the world where civilizations have failed to thrive for unknown reasons. Frances McDormand (Hail, Caesar!) will also star in the film. The book is the first volume of Vandermeer’s Southern Reach Trilogy.
Since her award-winning performance on Jane the Virgin, Rodriguez has been a hot name when discussing upcoming projects. She was recently up for a lead role in Star Wars: Episode VIII and will star with Mark Wahlberg in Peter Berg‘s Deepwater Horizon. She’s also starring in the thriller Asher, the comedy Sharon 1.2.3., and the family drama Sticky Notes.
Scott Rudin (Steve Jobs) is producing Annihilation under his production company for Paramount Pictures. Rudin is also set to produce the recently announced adaptation of The Girl in the Spider’s Web.
Annihilation is currently set for a 2017 release.
