Last night, during Sony’s presentation block at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, fans were surprised when Jason and Ivan Rietman took the stage to introduce the very first public screening of Ghostbusters: Afterlife. The screening was a complete surprise, being that the film is not set to release until November 11 later this year.
Here is the official plot synopsis for Ghostbusters: Afterlife: When a single mom and her two kids arrive in a small town, they begin to discover their connection to the original Ghostbusters and the secret legacy their grandfather left behind.
The film is written and directed by Jason Rietman, who was introduced on stage by his father Ivan Rietman, who directed the original Ghostbusters as well as its 1989 sequel. While on stage Jason Rietman said: “I am honored to be here tonight on behalf of Sony because they are the only studio that is completely dedicated to theatrical distribution.”
Though, throughout the pandemic, Sony has released several films directly to streaming. They held off on doing this for Afterlife, in hopes of a successful theatrical release.
When introducing the film Rietman promised fans: “You are about to go on the biggest Easter egg hunt of all time. From the opening musical piece to the end of the end credits, and all I ask is, please no spoilers… We’ve kept the ending secret so that people who come to your movie theaters (can discover it). I mean, if you like the movie, you can tell people that.”
And that is exactly what fans in attendance did. Many film critics went to Twitter following the screening to give their thoughts. Scott Menzell said the film is “nostalgia done right” while Jason Guerrasio said: “Wow! Was not expecting how heartfelt it is. It has a very childlike Spielberg vibe to it”
Ghostbusters: Afterlife is set to hit theaters on Veterans Day (November 11). Check out the trailer below:
