The remake of the 1980s comedy classic Ghostbusters has come on top of the box office this weekend as other films that have been in theaters for a longer period of time are slowing down in movie ticket sales.
The Jason Reitman-directed film has generated a solid $44 million on its debut weekend. Ghostbusters: Afterlife stars People Magazine’s officially sexiest man of the year, Paul Rudd, alongside Stranger Things teenage actor Finn Wolfhard. It couldn’t be a true Ghostbuster film without the special appearances of Bill Murray, Sigourney Weaver, and Dan Aykroyd. The story that completely revisions the 80s classic was pitched by two of the original Ghostbuster members, Harold Ramis and Dan Aykroyd himself. The film was especially successful in Middle America where the story of the movie takes place. The franchise is sure to make even more revenue with all its IP-specific merchandise and computer games. A Ghostbuster suit is already available to unlock on Fortnite and Hasbro has come out with a real-life-sized proton gun to catch ghosts.
Big franchises keep pushing forward for another weekend in the box office but with minor results compared to previous weeks. Eternals landed in second place with $10.8 million. Clifford the Big Red Dog is another family-friendly movie just like Ghostbusters: Afterlife, which came in third with $8.1 million. Will Smith’s role in King Richard as the father of two tennis legends from Compton, Venus and Serena Willams, performed poorly on its opening weekend with only $5.7 million. For a biopic film, especially starring a Hollywood A-list star such as Will Smith, it’s a lackluster debut.
A24 Studio’s movie C’mon C’mon starring Joaquin Phoenix released this weekend in very few and select movie theaters, such as AMC Burbank and AMC The Grove in Los Angeles. Even though the film only grossed $134K due to its selective theater viewing it has received a high rating of 92% certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.
