Get A First Look at Anita in Steven Spielberg’s ‘West Side Story’ Remake

A new photo has been released of the character Anita, played by Ariana DeBose, from West Side Story, a Broadway play that was originally written by Chita Rivera and was subsequently made into an award-winning film in 1961. Ariana Debose is most famous for competing on the competitive dancing series So You Think You Can Dance, where she placed in the top 20.

West Side Story is a film about the rivalry between two street gangs in 195os New York: the white Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks. This ultimately leads to a forbidden romance between members of both gangs. The original musical was written by Arthur Laurents, composed by both Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim, and based on William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.

The film also stars Ansel Elgort as Tony, Rachel Zegler as Maria, Ana Isabelle as Rosalia, Corey Stoll as Lieutenant Schrank, Brian d’Arcy James as Officer Krupke, Curtiss Cook as Abe, and Academy Award-winner Rita Moreno, who played Maria in the 1961 film adaptation of the Broadway musical, will play Valentina.

Steven Spielberg is directing the film and Tony Kushner wrote the screenplay. Twentieth Century Fox and Amblin Entertainment are producing, while Walt Disney Studios is distributing the film. West Side Story is set to be released in theaters on December 18, 2020.
