George Lazenby, an Australian actor best known for his roles as iconic master spy 007 James Bond in the 1969 On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, 1986’s Never to Yong to Die, 1996’s Gettysburg and his documentary Becoming Bond has announced in post on X previously Twitter that he is retiring from acting and public appearances. Lazenby stated that he wished to spend more time with his family and that ‘getting older is no fun’ but that he ‘had a fun ride’.
Lazenby gave a hit-making performance making many assume then that the new era of Bond had arrived. Connery, the first James Bond actor, did seven films as Bond and much like with Connery the studios wished to have Lazenby sign on for more films, a deal which Lazenby turned down. Before the role of Bond Lazenby worked as a car mechanic and served with the Australian Army before moving to London where he worked as a male model and played in a few commercials before landing the role of a lifetime. Lazenby may have walked away from the suit and pistol but his legacy as Bond is still seen.
In Lazenby’s own words in his documentary with Josh Greenbaum, he shared that he had no idea how he landed the role but enjoyed working on the film nonetheless.
