It looks like Disney’s Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is not the only disappointment at the box office this week, because according to MovieWeb, Gemini Man is also struggling. Both domestically and internationally, Gemini Man has only earned about $118.7 million. While that sounds like a lot of money at first, remember that Paramount spent around $140 million on the movie’s production budget, plus another $100 million in marketing. This large budget made it difficult for Gemini Man to succeed financially. The Hollywood Reporter estimates that it will have lost $75 million.
Gemini Man was released to mixed reviews, currently standing at 25% critical approval on Rotten Tomatoes. These reviews probably did not help Gemini Man, nor being released around the same time as Joker, which was a surprise box office smash. Furthermore Zombieland: Double Tap has just come out and is already starting to earn a decent amount, which make sense since people are probably gearing towards horror-based films in October rather than an action movie.
Gemini Man was directed by Ang Lee, best known for directing Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Brokeback Mountain, and stars Will Smith as both an assassin named Henry Brogan and Henry’s younger clone Jack Brogan. The movie was financed by both Paramount and Skydance Media. Both companies contributed to 35% of the film’s budget.
