With the original Urban Legend being released through Screen Gems in 1998, it is been announced that it is earning a modern update. Sony is currently developing a new Urban Legend script, currently being written by Shanrah Wakefield and directed by Gary Dauberman. One of the original producers of the film, Neal Moritz, is on board to produce the reboot as well.

Urban Legend was originally about a killer on a New England University Campus who kills inspired by local popular urban legends of the 1990s. The movie had a popular cast for its time, including Jared Leto, Tara Reid, Joshua Jackson, and Alicia Witt. The movie grossed a decent amount but underperformed against similar slasher pictures at the time, such as Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer.

As plot details concerning this reboot are currently being kept under wraps, and Sony has made no comment, some speculation includes how the film will detail some urban legends of the digital world.

Dauberman currently has his video game adaptation, Until Dawn, to be released today on the 25th. He also directed the hits Annabelle, It, and Salem’s Lot. His company, Coin Operated, will be its first business deal with Sony, which also distributed the video game Until Dawn exclusively on the PlayStation 4. Dauberman’s company will also work with Screen Gems on the upcoming Urban Legend reboot.
