Variety broke the scoop that Emmy winning Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage appears to be in talks to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. According to the venerable Hollywood trade, Dinklage is being eyed for a key role in Avengers: Infinity War. The role in question, however, is currently not known and Marvel is mum as of now, not offering confirmation at this time. However, sources allege to Variety that Dinklage may appear in both Infinity War and the currently untitled Avengers sequel, both of which will shoot back-to-back sometime this summer.
Dinklage’s schedule, reportedly, opened up as the seventh season of the HBO tentpole wrapped last fall (in contrast to their typical summer production schedule) which, in theory, makes the actor available. While specifics in regards to Avengers: Infinity War are still being kept close to the vest, the superhero team – mainstays Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and the like – will go to battle with the long teased Big Bad Thanos (Josh Brolin). Anthony and Joe Russo (Captain America: Civil War) will direct. While purely speculative at this early stage, might Dinklage come aboard to portray Pip the Troll? We shall see.
A bigger question overall is just how stuffed will Avengers: Infinity War be in the end? Not only have the Avengers mainstays boarded the picture, but so have a multitude of newer members of the Marvel family including the Guardians of the Galaxy set (Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista as well as Bradley Cooper’s Rocket Raccoon and Vin Diesel’s Groot), Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman), Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) and Spider-Man (Tom Holland).
Dinklage last appeared on screen in the Melissa McCarthy comedy The Boss and this year will be featured in Martin McDonagh’s Three Billboards of Outside Ebbing, Missouri. If he joins Avengers: Infinity War, it will mark his second role in a Marvel project as he previously portrayed Boliver Trask in X-Men: Days of Future Past, however that was a part of Fox’s end of the Marvel wing.
Avengers: Infinity War is set to hit theaters on May 4, 2018.
