Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga barely passed The Garfield Movie over the past weekend in North American box offices.
Sunday, both Warner Bros and Sony claimed their respective movies to be ranked first with about $25 million through Memorial Day weekend, and estimated to bring in up to $31 million over the holiday. Monday estimates say Furiosa brought in $32 million, with Garfield following close behind at $31.1 million over the four days.
This showing is particularly disappointing for Furiosa, the fifth installment of George Miller’s Mad Max series. The film, starring Anya Taylor–Joy and Chris Hemsworth, was expected to make up to $45 million through Memorial Day, which was already not a great report given the film cost $168 million. It is believed that the film faltered due to the standard that prequels do not do as well as direct sequels and failed to expand beyond the audience of older male viewers.
Garfield cost about $60 million to make and started being projected low. The movie has already made $66.3 million overseas or $91.1 million globally so it is currently well-positioned for the rest of its theatrical run.
According to Variety reporting, both estimates make this Memorial Day the worst box office weekend in three decades excluding 2020. When compared to Memorial Day weekend of 2023, box office sales are down 36%. This showing adds to “Hollywood’s summer woes” as overall ticket sales are 22% behind what they were in 2023 and 41% behind what they were in 2019, according to Variety.
