Full Cast Announced for James Gunn’s ‘The Suicide Squad’

One of the more highly anticipated films from Warner Bros’ DC Cinematic Universe is the upcoming soft reboot of Suicide Squad. Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn is set to direct the upcoming DC film. On his Twitter page, Gunn dropped quite a bit of casting news with plenty of new names and returning names confirmed for the film.

Gunn’s recent post listed the main cast for the DC film, totaling 24 actors. Some of The Suicide Squad’s new additions include a few big names such as Idris Elba, Peter Capaldi, John Cena and Nathan Fillion. Not only that but few MCU stars will be appearing in DC’s newest reboot, including Thor Ragnarok’s Taika Waititi and Guardians of the Galaxy’s Michael Rooker and Sean Gunn. Also included in the cast are newcomers Daniella Melchior, Steve Agee, and Jennifer Holland, just to name a few.

The only returning cast members involved in this production are Viola Davis, Joel Kinnaman, Jai Courtney and Margot Robbie, all likely reprising their roles from the 2016 film. Not listed in the cast is Will Smith, who was one of the biggest names to appear in Suicide Squad, making it unlikely that he’ll reprise his role as Deadshot. It was rumored that Idris Elba would be replacing Smith, but those rumors were later debunked. It has been noted that the post did not specify what character Elba will be playing. Other cast members from the first film who will not be returning are Karen Fukuhara, Jay Hernandez, and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje.

With such a huge and diverse list of names, this cast certainly has comic book movie fans intrigued. However, Gunn’s only caption to his tweet was, “Don’t get too attached.” This implies that, despite the star power attached to some of these actors, anyone could be killed off at any point within the film. Regardless of who lives or die, it’s certainly going to get fans interested in which high profile actor will appear next.

The Suicide Squad is set for release August 6th, 2021.

Ryan Pineda: When it comes to film, animation, video games and other mediums, I can discuss for hours about how much on why certain films and animated media made me the person I am today. I adore the artistic merit that comes from a lot of pop-culture media and will definitely love to have a conversation about favorite movies any day! I have graduated in 2017 with a BA in Film and Television at the University of Arizona. Been passionate about writing about films due to always having an interesting outlook on the medium. Will always see a film and will definitely be sure to recommend it to someone that I know for a fact would love that movie. Not only that but will also give reasons for why I think that film did or did not work as a movie, and the same can go for other pieces of media like television, video games and especially animated projects.
