Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez, the husband-and-wife songwriting team who scored Frozen, will write the music for Walt Disney Animation Studio’s Gigantic, its animated feature adaption of the fairy tale “Jack and the Beanstalk.” Disney chief creative officer John Lasseter made the announcement Friday at Disney’s D23 Expo at the Anaheim Convention Center in California.
Lopez and Anderson-Lopez won last year’s Academy Award for their work in Frozen (Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures, Original Song “Let It Go”). The film has gone on to become one of the top 10 highest-grossers of all time, among both animated and non-animated films.
Gigantic will be set in 15th century Spain during the Age of Discovery, also known as the Age of Exploration. The main character, Jack, climbs up a magic beanstalk and journeys into the clouds where he discovers a hidden world of giants. He befriends an 60 foot tall 11 year-old girl named Inma, and helps her find her way home. The character of Inma is based on a young girl whom the Disney creative team encountered on a research trip to Spain. Jack also comes across 120-feet tall “Storm Giants,” the villains of the tale.
Tangled’s Nathan Greno is set to direct the animated feature, with Dorothy McKim (Get A Horse!) producing. The film is scheduled to hit theaters in 2018.
