Paramount has announced that the thirteenth installment in the Friday the 13th franchise will reach theaters on Friday, March 13, 2015. The upcoming film will be yet another reboot unconnected to the 2009 film or the original series. Platinum Dunes, the makers of the 2009 reboot will also handle this film.
Set around the fictional Camp Crystal Lake, the Friday the 13th series follows the undead Jason Voorhees as he kills anyone unlucky enough to cross his path. The mythology for the series, regarding Jason’s motivation and how he is still alive, has varied from film to film. What has remained constant are Jason’s inhuman strength, ruthless efficiency, and his iconic hockey mask. According to a rumor from Shock Till You Drop, Platinum Dunes may consider a found footage story for Friday the 13th (2015). As a series set in the woods with a supernatural threat, it is not hard to imagine a found footage story based around Jason. On the other hand, the limitations of the found footage style could make it difficult to follow a pair of lovers that sneak away from the rest of the cast to engage in another (ahem) constant of the Friday the 13th series.
While none of the Friday the 13th films won over critics, the series has remained financially successful. The series is known less for humanizing the cannon fodder in the cast and more for the variety of gruesome deaths. The last film of the original series crossed over with the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise for Freddy vs. Jason. Due to an agreement with Warner Bros regarding the rights to the series, Paramount has five years to make more Friday the 13th movies so expect to hear more about this one soon.
