Many of Tim Burton’s films have their own distinct iconography. From Edward Scissorhands to Ed Wood, his touch is present on all of his directed features. But, none dominate the Halloween season quite like Beetlejuice does. Released in 1988, on a budget of $15 million, the film went on to pull in nearly 5x it’s original budget, with fans and critics alike both eating it up.
Very recently, Warner Bros. has announced that there will be a sequel to the film, set to come out in 2024, with Tim Burton returning to the director’s chair. And with Burton back, one can expect many of the crew to follow. Michael Keaton will be back as the titular character, Danny Elfman is teasing his work on the film, and the newest member, while she didn’t work on the original, is still a frequent collaborator with Burton, Colleen Atwood.
Atwood has worked with Burton as costume designer many times, always lending a keen eye to Burton’s gothic themes, eloquently translating it into thread. Most recently, she worked on Wednesday, which Burton served as a producer on.
Many of the costumes in the original Beetlejuice have stuck out since the films first release, most notably the black and white striped suit and tie that Keaton’s character dons. The original designer, Aggie Guerard Rodgers, did some fantastic work in the first film, but with the resume that Atwood brings to the table, moviegoers are sure to enjoy the visual flare of the outfits in the upcoming film.
Beetlejuice 2 is set to release on September 6, 2024, and will star Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Jenna Ortega.
