On Saturday, football fans got to catch the first glimpse of the new Matthew McConnaughey film Free State of Jones. Set in Jones County, Mississippi during the Civil War, the movie follows the incredible true story of anti-Confederate southern farmer Newton Knight (McConnaughey) and his attempt to free himself from Confederate rule. Knight is married to a former slave and assembles an army of rebels to help his cause.
Written and directed by four-time Academy Award nominee Gary Ross (The Hunger Games), Free State of Jones looks to be a powerful period piece with modern applications. Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Belle), Keri Russell (Waitress) and Mahershala Ali (The Place Beyond the Pines) also star.
Make sure to check out the trailer below. Free State of Jones hits theaters May 13.
