Francis Ford Coppola, director of films such as The Godfather, Apocalypse Now and The Outsiders, announced he will be selling seven of his personal watches to compensate for Megalopolis flopping. Megalopolis, Coppola’s latest film which released last year, was largely self-financed, costing around $120 million. The film was distributed by Lionsgate and grossed a mere $14 million worldwide.
Now, Coppola is selling some of his expensive watches in order to help cover the costs of that film. One of these is a custom F.P. Journe FFC Prototype watch which is estimated to be worth over $1 million. On the Tetragrammaton podcast earlier this year, Coppola stated that, “I don’t have any money because I invested all the money, that I borrowed, to make Megalopolis.” Journe, who created the created the custom watch which showed a human hand being used to tell time, stated that, “I am proud to fully support the sale of this watch through Phillips to fund the creation of his artistic masterpieces in filmmaking.”
Megalopolis was a passion project for Coppola, with him stating himself that he had the idea for decades and struggled to get the project. The director, who is 86 years old, finally decided to finance the film himself so it could be made. Starring Adam Driver, Nathalie Emmanuel, Giancarlo Esposito, Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf and a bunch of other big names, the film was an experimental sci-fi drama about an eccentric inventor trying to create the ultimate utopia. The film was largely panned by critics, and did not seem to click with general audiences either. Ultimately, while this turned out to be a massive financial failure for Coppola, Megalopolis was a passion project, and the film purely existing may be worth the cost.
