According to Deadline, Fox 2000 has obtained the rights to Divergent author, Veronica Roth’s most recent short story, Inertia. Roth’s debut novel was Divergent, which was published in 2011. 38 million copies of the book were sold worldwide. This warranted a film adaption which came out in 2014 and starred Shailene Woodley.
Temple Hill will partner with Wyck Godfrey and Mary Bowen to produce alongside Pouya Shahbazian. The short story was published last spring in the anthology Summer Days & Nights. Temple Hill is responsible for other young adult film adaptations such as The Twilight Saga, The Fault in Our Stars, Paper Towns, and The Maze Runner.
Intertia contains elements of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind as well as 500 Days of Summer. It takes place in the near future where technology has advanced to allow people “last visitations.” This is when a person can be connected to the consciousness of a person who is on their deathbed. The main protagonist, Claire’s estranged friend Matt is left in a fatal state after a car crash, she learns that his dying wish was to be connected to her for the last two minutes of his life. In those crucial minutes, they discuss their past friendship and the future they could have had together, but never will.
