With Keanu Reeves seeing a major comeback thanks to the John Wick films, many were curious if the franchise that put him on the map would be revived at some point. Now, at the height of the “Keanissance,” Warner Bros has announced that a fourth film for The Matrix series is in development. Not only will Keanu Reeves be returning as Neo, but so too will Carrie-Anne Moss as Trinity.
Matrix 4 also has some returning faces behind the camera, as one of the original directors, Lana Wachowski, is set to direct the upcoming sequel. Furthermore, she is also attached to produce the film with Grant Hill and wrote the script alongside Alexander Hemon and David Mitchell. The film will start production in 2020 and Warner Bros expressed some excitement with one of the original directors returning to the film. Chairman of Warner Bros, Toby Emmerich, noted Lana’s creative talent as a filmmaker and stated, “We could not be more excited to be re-entering ‘The Matrix’ with Lana.”
Not much has been revealed about the film’s plot, however there have been numerous rumors stated. One of the most notable rumors is that Laurence Fishburne might not return as Morpheus and could potentially be replaced by a younger star. Lana did state that she explored various ideas for a fourth film with her sister Lily and mentioned how the film is more relevant now than it was 20 years ago. She said, upon returning to the director’s chair, “I’m very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends.”
With such a long hiatus for a franchise, given how the final Matrix film released in 2003, many are curious to how this revival will pan out amongst other major blockbusters. Regardless, many are still also very interest to re-enter the world that was the Matrix. No release date has been set for Matrix 4.
