Former Disney Boss Signs Deal With A24

Since 2012, A24 has been known for producing independent films from small time directors, providing them with studio funding, but staying completely hands off in the making of the film. They completely let the team pursue their vision, and distributes the movie as the team wanted it. Most recently, they saw monstrous success in last year’s Everything Everywhere All At Oncewhich went on to win the Oscars for best picture, best supporting actor and actress, and best actress, just to name a few. It even scored them their biggest box office gross in the company’s history.

Peter Rice, former Disney Television chairman, has just signed deal with the company. He was appointed president of 20th Century Fox Television in 2017, and following Disney’s purchase of Fox, he then went on to serve as TV chairman under Disney, until he was fired in 2022. The deal is non exclusive, Deadline reports, but could lead to a fruitful partnership for the two.

If Rice picks up any projects, it will be financed by the studio’s banking, if he chooses to go through A24. He doesn’t have to go through them, but that will be the course of action if he does so. A24 co-founder Daniel Katz said, “Peter has extraordinary taste, one-of-a kind relationships with world-class creators and true vision. He also has a proven, unique ability to identify groundbreaking artists in both television and film and help facilitate their commercial success. For all that and more we’re honored that he’s chosen to begin his producing career with this partnership with A24.”

After Rice was booted out of Disney, there was a lot of speculation about where he would land afterwards, and while the move can be considered unusual for an independent company, the reputation that Rice carries can no doubt lead to a win for both sides of the deal.
