‘Flow’ Earns A Surprise Victory At The Golden Globes

The independent film Flow has earned surprise victory at the Golden Globes for Best Animated Feature. Written by Gints Zilbalodis and Matiss Kaza, Flow won an uphill battle. It faced off against the likes of Disney, Dreamworks, and Netflix with titles such as Inside Out 2, Moana 2, The Wild Robot, and Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl. It also competed with Oscar-winning director Adam Elliot’s Memoirs of a Snail.

Flow was co-produced between Latvia, Belgium, and France. It was also directed by Zilbalodis. Made with only $3.7 million, this little indie film was proud to receive simply a nomination in a space dominated by big-budget studios, which makes it all the more astonishing that it won.

Flow’s story surrounds the biblical flood. It follows a cat that takes refuge on a boat along with many other animals that have lost their homes.

Most notably, the film was made using the software Blender, a completely free animation software. This is the first time a Blender-made production has won a Golden Globe. This Golden Globes win is the cherry on top of all the other achievements Flow has earned. It had previously won awards at the Annecy, Ottawa, Guadalajara, and Melbourne film festivals.

Flow is distributed by Sideshow and Janus Films. It currently has a 97 percent critics’ score on the website Rotten Tomatoes, and it sports an even better audience score of 99 percent. The film even has a website that fans can explore. It features stills from the movie, the trailer, and a function to help find tickets to showings.

This win has marked a huge moment for independent animators everywhere. It shows that big awards such as the Golden Globes are starting to take their work into consideration. It will be exciting to see this evolution progress.
