The first trailer for David Fincher’s latest directorial effort has been released. Gone Girl, based on the novel of the the same name by Gillian Flynn, follows the story of woman, played by Rosamund Pike, who mysteriously goes missing on her wedding anniversary. Foul play is suspected and ultimately fingers point at the husband, played by Ben Affleck.
Simply based on the trailer (which you can find here), we’re seeing what looks to be a fantastic, dark, chilling suspense thriller. Let’s not forget that Fincher is the same director who helmed the acclaimed dark crime thrillers Seven (1995), Zodiac (2007), and most recently The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (2011). In fact, as far back as we can look, Fincher has displayed a strong talent for telling stories digging into the shadowy sides of their characters. In addition to the films mentioned above, we can include famous hits The Game (1997), Fight Club (1999), Panic Room (2002), and, yes, even The Social Network (2010), which exposed a dark side to Mark Zuckerberg’s rise to fame and fortune with the ever-growing Facebook. Gone Girl seems to be no exception.
Although he’s not a stranger to acting in crime thrillers, it is a little odd to see Affleck in the leading role of one without also finding him also directing. Supporting roles like in 2006’s Hollywoodland, 2009’s State Of Play and last year’s Runner Runner aside, Affleck has begun to rack up quite the resume as a director of crime dramas, usually topping the cast as well. Argo, of course, took home the Best Picture Oscar in 2012, but prior efforts The Town and Gone Baby Gone were also well-received (the latter, however, featuring brother Casey rather than Ben). Gone Girl looks like it will rely heavily on Affleck’s abilities, but it should at least be a fairly comfortable role for the actor before he dons the Batsuit in 2016’s Batman Vs. Superman. Fincher clearly thinks Affleck is up to the task for Gone Girl. Based on the trailer, it’s so far so good.
This dark preview certainly has a lot going for it. The music in the background adds a chilling creepiness we can only hope is honest to the true result of the film. Fincher is not usually one to disappoint in that regard. It’s worth mentioning the official website for Gone Girl is also quite creepy.
We’ll see if Fox ups the ante with a second trailer this summer. The film releases in theaters October 3.
