After numerous false alarms and an alleged low quality leak just yesterday, the actual first trailer for the highly anticipated Marvel film, “Spider-Man: No Way Home” has finally arrived, including some special appearances from characters that fans have been waiting for. Though not including the other actors who are rumored to be making returns to their past iterations of Peter Parker, such as Tobey Maquire and Andrew Garfield, there is still plenty to see in this first look at the upcoming film.
The plot of the film, which was previously under wraps, is now made clear in this three minute trailer, explaining how things leave off at the end of “Spider-Man: Far From Home.” In “Far From Home,” Peter had returned from his class trip to Europe and defeated Mysterio only to have his identity revealed for the world to see. Now, he is dealing with the repercussions of that reveal, including excessive attention from classmates and investigations into his clash with Mysterio. Peter and MJ are trying to continue their relationship, but it’s complicated by this newfound conflict.
To solve the problem, Peter visits fellow New-Yorker Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and asks him to use his time-bending skills to take away people’s knowledge of his identities. The spell, however, is all or nothing, and if it goes through then not even Peter’s friends and Aunt May will know any longer. Strange goes through with it anyway, and with an unexpected side effect.
It “tampered with the stability of space-time,” causing an offshoot of reality. This concept of the multi-verse will be familiar to viewers of animated film “Spider-Man: Into the Multi-Verse” and “Loki.”
The multi-verse lets new villains into Peter’s world, including familiar faces Doc Oc (Alfred Molina) and Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe), both villains from the Tobey Maquire-led “Spider-Man” films of 2002 and 2004. Though we don’t clearly see Green Goblin, we do see one of his iconic pumpkin bombs and hear his laugh.
