The first trailer of Till was released on what would have been Emmett Till’s 81st birthday. Directed by Chinonye Chukwu, the biopic tells the story of Mamie Till Mobley and her pursuit of justice following the lynching of her 14-year-old son in 1955 after he was falsely accused by a white woman.
“The lynching of my son has shown me that what happens to any of us, anywhere in the world, had better be the business of us all,” Mobley, portrayed by Danielle Deadwyler, says in the trailer. Her request for an open casket funeral became a turning point in the civil rights movement.
“No, they have to see it for themselves.”
Till is written by Michael Reilly, Keith Beauchamp, and Chukwu. The biopic stars Deadwyler, Whoopi Goldberg, Jalyn Hall, Frankie Faison, Jayme Lawson, Tosin Cole, Kevin Carroll, Sean Patrick Thomas, John Douglas Thompson, Roger Guenveur Smith, and Haley Bennett.
The story is based on Keith Beauchamp’s research and his relationship with Mamie Till Mobley and Till’s cousin, Simeon Wright, who witnessed the kidnapping of Till and served as a consultant to the project until he passed away in 2017. Beauchamp investigated the case for over 27 years until it was reopened by the United States Department of Justice in 2004.
Till will premiere at the 60th New York Film Festival which will take place between September 30 and October 16. It is also scheduled for theatrical release by MGM’s Orion Pictures on October 14 as well as a nationwide release on October 28.
