Years after its unorthodox opening and unfortunate loss, the spy thriller Blackbird has been picked up for a U.K and Irish release later on September 2nd. The distribution for the film is being handled by Wildcard Distribution, who caused a stir earlier this month by announcing Blackbird‘s release in Ireland.
The film is directed, produced, financed, and starring Irish-American dancer Michael Flatley as an troubled former MI6 operative pulled out of his life of retirement to go back to the world he ran from and reignite an old flame. The film had its premiere at London’s Raindance Film Festival, a screening where journalists and critics were disallowed from viewing the film resulting in the film getting very little public reaction.
After the film’s release, it gained a cult following who routinely asked for the film to get a major market release. After Flatley won for Best Actor at the 2021 Monaco Streaming Festival, the cries for an wide-release grew exponentially.
Speaking earlier this month, Flatley blamed COVID for the lack of a widespread release. However, after the release of the trailer for the film to mark the Irish release garnered comparisons to The Office, the director may have some apprehension about the future release of Blackbird.
