First Trailer for Jeremy Renner Thriller ‘Kill the Messenger’

In case you’re already looking past the summer movie season of superheroes and city-stomping monsters to more serious-minded fare, this trailer for Kill the Messenger is the first glimpse at what figures to be one of the more compelling movies this fall.  Jeremy Renner (American Hustle, The Hurt Locker) stars as real-life journalist Gary Webb, who found himself in the cross-hairs when investigating the CIA’s possible involvement in cocaine trafficking in the 80’s.

The trailer poses a fun challenge for movie-buffs to name all the actors, as a new recognizable face seems to pop up every 10 seconds.  Joining Renner in the movie will be Rosemarie DeWitt (Promised Land), Mary Elizabeth Winstead (The Spectacular Now), Oliver Platt (X-Men: First Class), Tim Blake Nelson (Lincoln), Paz Vega (Spanglish), Ray Liotta (Beyond the Pines), Andy Garcia (Ocean’s 13), and Michael Sheen (Frost/Nixon), who brings the trailer to an end with the brilliant line, “some stories are just too true to tell.”  Bonus point if you spot Michael K. Williams, a.k.a Omar from The Wire.

Another reason to be excited is the movie’s director, Michael Cuesta, who started his career on the indie circuit with the critically lauded L.I.E and Twelve and Holding.  Cuesta then segued to TV, working on a variety of hit shows like Six Feet Under, Dexter, True Blood, Homeland, and Elementary.  Kill the Messenger marks his first time directing a feature since 2011’s small-budget drama Roadie.  This will be by far Cuesta’s highest-profile feature to date.  Focus Features will release Kill the Messenger in theaters on October 10th.
