“A murder like that only goes unsolved if the police don’t want to solve it.”
Within the first thirty seconds of the first trailer for the Brad Furman-directed film City of Lies, we see and hear some intense questioning about the murder of rap phenomenon Biggie Smalls, and we are ready for the trip that this film wants to take us on.
In the film, we follow LAPD detective Russell Poole (Johnny Depp) and journalist Jack Johnson (Forest Whitaker) as they delve into the investigation into the unsolved murder of Biggie Smalls and its possible connection to Tupac Shakur.
Poole and Johnson are convinced that the LAPD have a huge role in the death of the hip-hop artist, and they are determined to get to the bottom of the mysteries around the murder. Their investment may come at an insurmountable cost, though.
City of Lies is based on the book LAbyrinth by Randall Sullivan and is being produced by Miriam Segal’s Good Films.
The film is set for release on September 7, 2018.
