Originally shelved and used as a tax write off for Warner Bros. Discovery in 2023, Coyote vs. ACME is finally being released. Due to this drama, the tagline “The Film Acme Didn’t Want You To See” is being utilized.
Will Forte stars as billboard lawyer Kevin Avery, whose services have been rendered in an effort to sue the Acme corporation. Coyote is fed up with Acme products hindering him in his pursuit of Roadrunner. Standing in front of the duo is Acme’s corporate counsel Buddy Crane, played by John Cena. The film promises to introduce plenty of other Looney Tunes characters, including Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Sylvester, Porky Pig, Tweety, and Foghorn
The original scrapping and shelving of the full film helped Warner Bros. secure an estimated $115 million tax write-down. After serious social media backlash, Ketchup Entertainment was able to secure distribution rights for the film. The move came in the early days of David Zaslav stepping into the role of CEO at the studio, along with the decision to shelve another completed film, Batgirl. Zaslav spoke to the New York Times about his original thought process.
“The question is, should we take certain of these movies and open them in the theater and spend another $30 or $40 million to promote them? And [the] Warner Bros. team and HBO made a number of decisions. They were hard. But when I look at the health of our company today, we needed to make those decisions. And it took real courage.”
Will Forte was caught by surprise that the film secured distribution, but expressed to the Hollywood Reporter great excitement and an interest in heavily promoting the film to the best of his abilities. Coyote vs. ACME is directed by Dave Green. Samy Burch is credited as penning the script, also gaining credit for the story itself alongside James Gunn and Jeremy Slater. Christoper DeFaria and James Gunn are attached as producers. The rest of the cast includes Lana Condor, Tone Bell, P.J. Byrne, Luis Guzmán, and Martha Kelly. Ketchup Entertainment released a press release for the film, which includes a description of the film.
After decades of being blown to bits by bombs, demolished by dynamite, mangled by magnets, battered by boulders, trampled by trains, tricked by tunnels, sprung by springs, steamrolled by steamrollers, maligned by misfires, bedeviled by bungees, rattled by rockets, backstabbed by bat suits, rocked by rocket skates, upended by unicycles, quaked by quake pills, rubberized by rogue bands, and hurled headlong off every cliff in the Southwest, Wile E. Coyote finally fights back. Teaming up with billboard accident lawyer Kevin Avery (Will Forte), he takes on slick corporate counsel Buddy Crane (John Cena) and ACME, Inc., the profit-obsessed conglomerate behind every one of the Coyote’s chaotic catastrophes.
Coyote vs. ACME is set to hit theaters on August 28, see the full trailer below.
