Ever since the first film back in 2013, The Purge horror series has been somewhat of a standout part of the genre because of its attempts at showing social violence, inequality, and chaos in the United States. And while it may only appeal to a select group of moviegoers, it definitely has some weight to it compared to others of its kind. The main premise of the series is about having one night a year where all crime is legal. It opens up doors to many interesting ideas, as well as extreme violence.
Following the second installment, The Purge: Anarchy, writer-director James DeMonaco is once again helming this third installment, due out this summer. By the look of it, the film seems to be leaning more towards the terror of the streets of Anarchy rather than the more housebound storyline that the first film utilized.
Frank Grillo, the lead of the previous film, is returning again to tackle this night of fright, but there also seems to be a political aspect to it where senators get involved in either keeping or removing The Purge. Hopefully as the series grows it will continue to get smarter, if not even more extreme in its execution of themes and terror. No matter what, the design of this world looks very enticing and original.
The Purge: Election Year will be released by Universal on July 1, 2016.
