Paramount Pictures has finally released the first photos from its fast-approaching release of this Summer’s highly anticipated Hercules, and star Dwayne Johnson, who’s been tweeting about the film’s progress for months, was quick to help get them out to the masses. Not far off the heels of Renny Harlin’s disappointing The Legend of Hercules, the release of these new pictures gives a new understanding of what to expect from this new spin on the most famous of demigods.

Most striking about two images is Johnson’s noticeably larger physique (who actually thought that was possible?) Clearly, all that hard work in the gym – as Johnson says in the tweet, eight months prior to the start of principal photography, in addition to continued training during production – has paid off. Johnson looks as built and physically intimidating as Hercules should. Also of note is the realistic look of the film. Brett Ratner seems to have gone with a look more reminiscent of the time period in which Hercules may have lived. Where The Legend of Hercules went with a more stylized graphic-novel feel a-la-Zack Snyder’s 300, Ratner seems to have gone with a more realistic look similar to Ridley Scott’s Gladiator and Wolfgang Petersen’s Troy. For those wondering, no, Johnson did not suddenly go on an extreme Rogaine regimen to match his workout schedule – instead, he spent a reported 2/12 hours a day having the beard, which is made of yak hair, applied, part of 3-4 1/2 hours spent daily in the makeup chair. It’s looking pretty good in the stills, and we’ll get a chance to see if all that work paid off in motion when the trailer (per Johnson) releases tomorrow. Hercules releases July 25th in the U.S.
