Sony has released a new clip in which we get out first real look at Logan Lerman’s (Noah) dramatic turn as a rookie soldier under the intense leadership of Brad Pitt’s (World War Z) “Wardaddy” in Fury.
The film, to be released on October 17th, portrays a veteran U.S. tank team moving its way into German territory in the last days of WWII. Lerman’s young character, Norman Ellison, creates conflict amongst the more experienced and weathered members of the team, as this clip makes apparent. As the film seemingly aims to depict the relationship between war and humanity, by telling an isolated account of a five-man team, this scene sets up a particularly vulnerable human moment.
Writer-director David Ayer (End of Watch), along with Pitt and the rest of the cast – which includes Shia Labeouf (Transformers) and Michael Peña (American Hustle) – committed to building this opposition throughout production. In an interview with ShortList Magazine in March, Lerman revealed, “I just got hazed throughout the whole film; the actors and director really pushed me out of my comfort zone.” It sounds like we can expect the film to expand the brutality of war to a personal and individual level, beginning with the tension between Pitt and Lerman’s characters.
The Perks of Being a Wallflower actor has already garnered high praise for his performance leading up to Fury‘s release, even generating some early awards-season buzz. If this clip is any indication, we can expect more serious and hard-hitting roles for Lerman in the future. His co-star, Pitt, has several highly-anticipated films already in the pipeline, including True Story, a drama he is producing that stars Jonah Hill (Wolf of Wall Street) and James Franco (127 Hours), which will be released later this year. Pitt is also a producer on Selma, which chronicles the infamous civil rights marches in Alabama, and he will act alongside wife Angelina Jolie (Malificent) in By the Sea.
