Christian Bale has some big shoes to fill, taking over the role Charlton Heston made famous in the 1956 Hollywood epic The Ten Commandments. Bale is starring as Moses in legendary filmmaker Ridley Scott’s Exodus, the Biblical drama of the Israelites being led to the land of milk and honey. Production is wrapping up shooting in the Sierra Alhamilla Mountain Range, Almeria, Spain.
Christian Bale is currently starring in both Scott Cooper’s PTSD drama Out of the Furnace and David O. Russell’s con man story, American Hustle. The first official image from Exodus shows the multi-faceted Bale stepping effortlessly into Moses’ sandals riding a stallion in the desert. Director Ridley Scott does not shy away from challenge, and is undaunted by the negative reception to his last big screen feature The Counselor, with a script by Pulitzer Prize winning author Cormac McCarthy (No Country For Old Men).
Exodus is not the only Moses-based film in production. Gods & Kings, the story of Moses’ life from a young boy to the fabled leader, is in pre-production with Academy Award winning director Ang Lee (Brokeback Mountain, Life of Pi) at the helm and a script by Michael Green and Stuart Hazeldine.
Adam Cooper, Bill Collage and Steve Zaillan have written the script for Exodus, which also stars Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul, playing the slave Joshua, who continues to lead the people to the promised land after Moses, and Joel Edgerton (The Great Gatsby) plays the antagonist Ramses 11, ruler of Egypt. Ben Kingsley (Iron Man 3), Sigourney Weaver (Avatar, Alien) and John Turturro (Gods Behaving Badly, Fading Gigolo) have supporting roles.
Exodus is being produced by Peter Chernin, Dylan Clark, Ridley Scott, Jenno Topping and Scott Free Productions. Opening day is scheduled for December 12, 2014, and is our Best of 2013 pick for Most Anticipated Movie in December of 2014.
