First Footage Of ‘The Black Phone 2’ Shown At CinemaCon 2025

During Universal’s panel at CinemaCon 2025, Universal and Blumhouse gave attendees the first look at The Black Phone 2, the sequel to the surprise horror hit released in 2022. Though the footage has not been posted online, MovieWeb, using information sourced from DiscussingFilm, provided a detailed description of the footage.

The footage, set to the Alice in Chains song “The Rooster,” begins with Finney, the protagonist of the first movie, played by Mason Thames, living a gloomy existence. His sister continues to have strange visions, as in the previous movie. It’s revealed that Finney’s sister, Gwen, played by Madeline McGraw, has a connection to the spirit of Ethan Hawke’s sinister antagonist, The Grabber. The Grabber intends to torture Finney and his sister from beyond the grave through their dreams and visions, similar to Freddy Krueger in the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise. Interspersed throughout the footage are flashes of a black phone ringing. DiscussingFilm calls the rest of the footage “pure nightmare fuel.”

Here’s DiscussingFilm’s full description of the rest of the footage:

There’s a striking image of The Grabber ice skating towards the camera in slow-motion. It appears that The Grabber has a special connection with Gwen, managing to somehow get a hold of her from beyond, spinning her around in rapid succession as Finney appears to see that image in a phone booth. Without a doubt, it looks even more terrifying than the first movie, given its stronger supernatural elements.

Scott Derrikson is returning as writer and director for the sequel, along with co-writer C. Robert Cargill. Mason Thames, Madeline McGraw, and Ethan Hawke are also all returning. Academy Award-nominated actor Demián Bichir has been added to the cast, though it’s unknown what role he’ll play in the film. The film is once again being produced by Jason Blum through Blumhouse Productions.

The Black Phone 2 will be released in theaters on October 17th.
