‘Fire Island’ Trailer: A Gay Twist On a Jane Austen Classic

Searchlight Pictures released the official trailer to their Hulu Original Fire Island, a twist on Jane Austen’s classic slow-burn romance, Pride and Prejudice. The story centers on two best friends (Joel Kim Booster and Bowen Yang) who set out to have a legendary summer adventure on the iconic island getaway with the help of cheap rosé and their cadre of eclectic friends.

Yang is the bookish, responsible half of the duo, with glasses to match. His first words in the trailer being him screaming at a very tardy Booster, “Get on the boat!” He doesn’t seem too excited about the entire affair, lamenting he feels “terminally alone” whenever he comes and complaining to Booster that he talked him into this again. Everything changes when a chance meeting with a doctor take the group to an extravagant beach house party. The wealthier attendees turn their noses up at the rowdy bunch, especially the doctor’s grumpy friend who accuses Yang’s friends of using them for free liquor.

In Pride and Prejudice fashion, the two spend more time together and through artful tongue lashings and club sequences, maybe fall in love. Joel Kim Booster (The Other Two) wrote the script with Andrew Ahn (MacGyver, Gentefied) directing. Fire Island will premiere on Hulu June 3rd.
