As the weekend box office is called a clear winner is seen with Final Destination Bloodlines from Warner Brothers showing that sometimes lightning can strike thrice regardless of predictions. Racking up a franchise best at $51 million, Bloodlines took home first booting Marvel’s Thunderbolts* which is still only in its third week from the top. Bloodlines was originally projected to land around $46 million to $47 million but its mass appeal carried it further, Final Destination 5 released in 2011 was the franchise last outing seeing only $18 million for its opening.
Trailing behind, Thunderbolts* brought in $16.5 million securing that 2nd place over Sinners which saw an additional $15.4 million in its fifth week having not known what its like to sit below the top 3.
In its final hurrah, A Minecraft Movie took 4th with $5.9 million after a strong seven weeks attempting to conquer the $1 billion threshold falling short with an international total gross of $928 million, with a highly anticipated streaming release around the corner there’s still a chance to see the film strike gold again. 5th went to The Accountant 2 with $4.9 million rounding out the top five.
At the bottom of the boards for openings Hurry Up Tomorrow bombs hard, with a miniscule $3.3 million for its first week for another massive loss on Lionsgate’s part. Staring Abel Tesfaye also known as The Weeknd, the film is a companion piece to the studio album of the same name. Sitting at 6th, Hurry Up Tomorrow is likely to not break the top five on a run back as poor word of mouth and critics slapping a disappointing C- CinemaScore blast the film.
In 7th for a surprising win came indie hit Friendship which despite a limited release saw $1.4 million for its second week beating Clown in a Cornfield also in its second week by .1 million. In 8th, Clown in a Cornfield brought in $1.3 million knocking Until Dawn to 9th which saw only $800K for its fourth week.
10th went to The Amateur which brought in $712K for the end of its sixth week run.
