Filmmaker Mohammad Rasoulof Faces Sentence From Court

Director Mohammad Rasoulof has just been sentenced to eight years in prison. On top of the sentence, he’s also been charged with flogging, a fine, and a confiscation of the properties held by him. The penalties leveled against Rasoulof were confirmed by his lawyer Babak Paknia on X.

As the Hollywood Reporter notes, the prison sentence was borne from his stance against the hard-line regime that has been put in place. The government was implemented in Tehran, the capital of Iran.

Rasoulof had put his name on a petition against the regime, specifically for security to use restraint when dealing with protesters. He was arrested for it in July of 2022.

The director has a film releasing just on the horizon. The Seed Of The Sacred Fig follows a judge in Tehran stuck in the middle of political unrest when they get caught up in a mystery of their own. The Seed Of The Sacred Fig stars Sohelia Golestani, Setareh Malek, Missagh Zareh, and Masha Rostami.

Seed Of The Sacred Fig will screen competitively at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival, though Rasoulof will not be in attendance when the film runs.
