After months of filming the upcoming soft reboot of Suicide Squad, James Gunn announced on social media that principal photography has been completed. The director made the announcement on Instagram and discussed that working on the film was a lot tougher than initially expected. Not just due to the fact that he became director shortly after Marvel temporarily kicked Gunn off Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 due to a Twitter controversy, but also some personal troubles in Gunn’s own life during filming.

In the Instagram post, Gunn stated that he dealt with two major losses as his father passed away two weeks before filming and his dog passed away a few weeks before shooting ended. While Gunn expressed that it was tough to deal with both losses during filming, he also stated that this was maybe the most fulfilling time he ever had making a movie. He stated, “The professionalism, talent, compassion and kindness of this cast and crew inspired me every day.”
It was made clear during production that Gunn would have a huge amount of creative control over The Suicide Squad. The film still has some ties to the original David Ayer film, as many of the 2016 cast members will be returning, including Margot Robbie as fan favorite Harley Quinn. However the film will have more of Gunn’s initial style and a huge of new additions including Idris Elba, John Cena, Taika Waititi and many others. Fans of James Gunn and DC are incredibly excited for this upcoming revival, as Gunn’s sense of style could work very easily for this project. Add on the inclusion of an R rating, and there’s a lot excitement toward all the mayhem Gunn has in store for us.
The Suicide Squad is set for release August 6th 2021.
