Marvel’s Fantastic Four: First Steps, directed by Matt Shakman, reached great heights with $24.4 million in Thursday previews at the North American Box Office. This secured the biggest preview gross of the year to date, just ahead of rival DC’s Superman ($22.5 million), and below of fellow Marvel film, Deadpool & Wolverine ($38.5 million) from last year.
This is good news for Disney-owned Marvel Studios, Marvel’s president, Kevin Feige, who continued to look for salvation with this next phase after a rough few years with Marvel films (Deadpool & Wolverine being the exception). Disney will also become the first Hollywood studio to cross $3 billion in global ticket sales sometime today, July 25.
Disney and Marvel are predicting a North American opening of $100 million to $110 million, the same for overseas. However, based on advance ticket sales, strong reviews and high early audience scores, it is possible the reboot of Marvel’s first family could open even higher.
James Gunn’s Superman debuted with a successful $125 million domestically two weeks ago and $95 million overseas. Lower overseas numbers can be attributed to the pro-American themes tied to the character. First Steps may have the upper hand overseas, as the previous films from 20th Century Fox did more of their business offshore.
Fantastic Four: First Steps is set in an early 1960s retro-styled New York City, and stars Pedro Pascal as scientific genius Reed Richards, who leads a space expedition with his wife, Sue Storm, played by Vanessa Kirby, her brother, Johnny Storm, played by Joseph Quinn, and piloted by Reed’s best friend Ben Grimm, played by Ebon Moss-Bachrach. They find themselves in a cosmic storm and return to Earth with superpowers after the storm altered their DNA.
The film follows the crew after they become worldwide heroes. But a new threat approaches in Juilis Garner’s Silver Surfer, as she heralds their greatest threat yet, Galactus.
